Extraversion and performance: a test of the theory of cortical inhibition.

چکیده

Hysterics, according to Eysenck, are more extraverted than dysthymics. The primary factor underlying this difference is thought to be differences in cortical inhibition. In the present study, a test was made of the hypothesis that extraversion scores should correlate with scores on performance tasks purported to depend on cortical inhibition. None of the performance measures correlated with extraversion scores. When a subset of subjects with highneuroticism scores were used, only one of the correlations between performance and extraversion reached statistical significance and that was opposite to prediction. In addition, a zone analysis failed to yield significant correlations expected by theory. It is concluded that while extraversion may be important to differential neurotic development, the theory that extraversion, and therefore types of neurosis, is based on cortical inhibition is not supported by the data.

A brief note on extraversion and performance.

An experiment by Cohen and Horn purporting to test Eysenck's theory of extraversion is criticized on the following grounds: (a) unsuitable sample, (6) lack of proper experimental control, (c) failure to choose appropriate parameter values, and (rf) improper theoretical formulation. It is argued that the results throw little light on the nature of extraversion-introversion nor on the theory of c...

Eysenck's Theory of Personality and the Role of Background Music in Cognitive Task Performance: A Mini-Review of Conflicting Findings and a New Perspective

The question of whether background music is able to enhance cognitive task performance is of interest to scholars, educators, and stakeholders in business alike. Studies have shown that background music can have beneficial, detrimental or no effects on cognitive task performance. Extraversion-and its postulated underlying cause, cortical arousal-is regarded as an important factor influencing th...

The interactive effect of personality, time of day, and caffeine: a test of the arousal model.

The personality dimension of introversion/extraversion is one of the few personality dimensions that can be reliably identified from study to study and investigator to investigator. The importance of this demension within personality theory is due both to the stability of the trait and the influential theory of H. J. Eysenck. The basic assumption in Eysenck's theory of introversion/extraversion...

Inhibition of Angiotensin-Converting Enzyme Reduces Cerebral Infarction Size in Experimental-Induced Focal Cerebral Ischemia in the Rat

Background: The role of Renin Angiotensin System (RAS) in ischemic/reperfusion (I/R) injuries is not fully elucidated. Furthermore, it is not clear whether inhibition of RAS by Angiotensin-Converting Enzyme (ACE) inhibitors has beneficial effects in terms of protecting the brain from I/R injuries. In this study enalapril is used as an ACE inhibitor to evaluate the role of RAS in I/R injuries in...
